2013 VIRGINIA POLAR PLUNGE SETS ALL-TIME FUNDRAISING RECORD

What do you suppose Martians would have thought had they landed their spaceship at the Virginia Beach oceanfront this past weekend during the 21st Annual Virginia Polar Plunge?

What would they have thought of the at least one hundred “flash mobbers” who broke into dance as surprised onlookers cheered? What of the humans (they were humans, weren’t they?) walking up and down the boardwalk dressed in everything from gorilla suits to adult diapers, from super hero costumes to cereal boxes? How shocked would they have been to observe thousands of earthlings diving, en masse, into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean? Not as a result of some form of cruel punishment exacted by a horrible leader, but of these creatures’ own volition?

Crazy earthlings, no?

Yet, so it was on Saturday, February 2 as over 3,000 people of all races, shapes, sizes, and physical capabilities converged at the oceanfront to celebrate one of the most anticipated, and without a doubt, most inclusive, events of Hampton Roads.

Many came because the Polar Plunge is an annual tradition. Others came to scratch “Polar Plunging” off their bucket list. But all liked knowing that the money raised from the event would help provide year-round support to more than 11,000 Special Olympics athletes in Virginia.

According to event organizers, this year’s Plunge raised over $1.2 million, setting an all-time record for most money raised, and the third year in a row that Plungers raised more than $1 million.

The two-day Polar Plunge Winter Festival which kicked off on Friday included a Cool School Challenge, a Pre-Plunge Party, a Polar Plunge 5K, and a Pee Wee Plunge for children. The Polar Plunge, with water temperatures in the low 40s, was held at 2:30 pm on Saturday. The Weekend Festival ended with an After Plunge Beach Bash in a warm tent.

Crazy? No. We’d rather think fun, warm-hearted, and most of all… generous!
