Kooky Color Me Rad 5K Delights in Virginia Beach

So you slept in on Sunday and missed the Color Me Rad 5K. What? Too much tequila celebrating Cinco de Mayo the night before? Or, was it the mint juleps at the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby party that got ya?

Either way, hundreds, maybe thousands of Hampton Roads residents are kicking themselves for having missed the latest rage in 5K runs sweeping the nation. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never ran a marathon. No matter if you can’t make it around the block without needing an infusion of oxygen. It’s just that you felt you had missed something truly memorable after watching local TV news coverage of Color Me Rad Virginia Beach, or enviously looking at the beaming photographs of your friends (those who left last night’s party early) posted on Facebook after they had completed the race. Show offs!

Color Me Rad Virginia Beach, held on May 6 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex is an exhilarating race in which participants begin with whiter-than-the-driven-snow running tog (or as organizers prefer, “whiter than your grandpa’s dentures), and end up at the finish line doused with rainbow colored cornstarch and washable spray paint.

Hampton Roads Social wanted to know more about this delightful and kooky event? Here’s Scott Crandall of Color Me Rad answering our questions ever so irreverently (just as we like it!):

HRS: Why Color Me Rad? How did you come up with the concept?
Scott: It probably came about from inhaling too much corn starch when making gravy at Thanksgiving. But actually we were inspired by Holi and especially the Festival of Colors that takes place in Spanish Fork, UT every year at the local Hare Krishna temple. It draws over 20,000 people each year. We figured–why not combine that with a run and give it our best shot to ruin people’s running gear? I mean, use it to get a broader group of people involved in running and raise money for some very deserving local charities.

HRS: Who is the head honcho?
Scott: Matt Ward is in charge of marketing, emceeing and making sure each and every participant basks in color and unbridled joy at every race. If people don’t emerge with a smile on their faces, Matt gets fired and we enroll that participant in therapy sessions.

HRS: Where was the first race, and how many years have you been doing this?
Scott: It started this year and our first race was in Utah, so VA Beach is race #2 and it blew us away with how much people enjoyed it. We’ll definitely be back next year, cuz there were too many kids crying colored tears of joy afterwards, and we’d hate to be the ones to take that from a child.

HRS: The event in Virginia Beach benefited the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. Tell us about that.
Scott: Let’s just say that the Y provided some of the best volunteers we’ve ever had. So willing and so helpful. We raised over $16K for the Y and about another $2K for other groups.

HRS: People want to know. Have you made a decision about coming back to Virginia Beach next year?
Scott: That’s like asking Santa if he’ll come back next Christmas to bring joy to the lives of 5 year olds everywhere. After how well VB treated us, how could we refuse?

The sold-out event in Virginia Beach attracted more than 7,000 participants who paid a $40 registration fee to run, and even more onlookers who came to see the delightful spectacle.
