The Ducktape Regatta – When you’re all charity gala’d, mud run’d, golf’d, and booze-fested out!

The Ducktape Regatta is back, and we can’t wait!

Why?

Because let’s be honest. If you’re a charity event goer beginning in January, by the time the end of the summer rolls around, you are all gala’d, mud run’d, golf’d, and booze-fested out!

Don’t get us wrong… all these are fantastic ways for organizations to raise money for worthy causes – and they raise a lot of it, thanks to generous sponsors and citizens who get dolled up for galas, climb terrifying obstacles and crawl through sloppy ditches at mud runs, participate in golf tournaments, and (one our favorites) attend all-you-can-eat-drink-dance fests for charity.

But, if you’re suffering from the “been there, done that’s,” then the Ducktape Regatta may be precisely what the doctor ordered.

When Hampton Roads Social was asked to help promote and cover The Ducktape Regatta last year, we had never heard of it. Despite the fact that it had been around for nine years.

We ‘got’ the Regatta part. But what was with the “duck” tape?

Ah… well, this is where things get interesting with this event.

Ducktape Regatta participants are given four hours to create a “boat” out of a kit that contains a sheet of plywood, two 2x4s, a ROLL OF DUCT TAPE, and a pound of screws. Teams strategize on how to build and decorate the craft, and name the vessel.

As builders build, the excitement in the air is electric. Many teams don team t-shirts or crazy outfits, and in the background, a DJ spins music to keep the participants and spectators entertained. There is food and beer for purchase.

The boats are then manned (or, in many cases “wo-manned”) and launched into a race for seaworthiness and speed. (So, your boat must be able to float like a duck, with the help of duct tape. And there you have it… “ducktape” regatta).

It is exhilarating for participants, and a hoot for spectators!

As far as events go, it is truly one of this area’s best.
